Facing the BLANK Page

Sitting here in front of the computer at 8 AM wondering what to write.  Several things come to mind and for one reason or another are discarded but I think I’ll review them right here just to clear them out….

During the March break I stayed in Guelph with my family for a night.  We stayed at a hotel on the Wednesday eve and came home on the Thursday.  Not a long vacation but time enought for us to spend some time together in a more meaningful way than we do at home.  In the comfort of our castle, we tend to be together but all doing separate things:  someone on the computer, someone watching TV in the family room, someone constructing a spaceship out of toilet paper tubes, someone harrassing the dogs, and someone else puttering around the house.  Not exactly apart but not quite together.  In Guelph, we went swimming, had snacks, walked to the Tim Hortons on the corner, and then lazed around the hotel room together.  Nice.

Our two Dalmatians are getting older now and seem less and less “there”.  Riley, the older of the two is 13 years old now and he is getting pretty creaky in the mornings.  He also is not in good control of his…movements.  I have to listen for him while I’m sleeping and as soon as I hear him get out of his bed I have to get him and his sister out of bed and outside before his…movement…surprises him and me.  His sister can hold it a bit better but she needs to get outside right away too since she is 12 and not in complete control either.  It’s sad really but in many ways they age just like we do.  Creakier in the mornings, in need of doggy diapers, Riley has cataracts (Patches eyes are clear so far), and both of them spend more and more time sleeping.  Occasionally they will perk up and act like puppies again but it doesn’t last very long and stops abruptly if Riley runs face-first into the wall.  We need to enjoy their company as much as possible now before we run out of time.

The Coming of Spring?

What a beautiful couple of days it has been.  The snow is melting, birds are signing, and that smell of spring is in the air.  Even though this was a pretty mild winter, it’s nice to see the signs of spring headed our way.  I’m starting to think about what to plant in the garden this year – tomatoes, cucumbers, snow peas, and beans being the most likely.  And how to keep cats out of my backyard is still a conundrum for me.  I don’t want to hurt them, just stop them from coming in my backyard and relieving themselves.

The Olympics was a fantastic distraction and I’m glad that they were in Vancouver.  It brings out the nationalistic pride that Canada is sometimes so short on.  We tend to be pretty subdued sometimes and it’s nice to see some flag-waving nationalistic chest beating once in awhile!  I’m especially glad that the Canadian hockey teams brought golden glory to this country in 2010.  The men’s final couldn’t have been scripted better.  The Canadian team leads, the American team ties it up seconds before regulation ends, and then Mr. Crosby finishes it off in the extra time.  Even the contribution of Jarome Iginla seems apt for the assist since there seemed to be some confusion around which line he should be on.  That last shift he was the right man at the right place to give Crosby the puck.

A Lemon Tree from Seed

About 18 months ago I cut into a lemon and as I was pulling out the seeds, I thought it would be interesting to plant a few of them and see what happens.  I dropped a couple of seeds into one of those peat pods and a week or so later got my first glimpse of what has become a mini lemon tree sitting on my windowsill.  It has grown to about a foot in height and has almost a dozen leaves.  It is still mainly one “trunk” but there is one branch heading off to one side and I’m hopeful that there will be more to follow.

The leaves are wonderfully fragrant when they are touched and although I understand that it can take years before a fruit appears, I am willing to wait.  Even if I never get a lemon off this little tree I am going to keep it and let it grow up in our dining room.  I understand that lemon trees also sprout thorns which I have not seen yet.  I like to grow vegetables out in our backyard during the summer and I have an AeroGarden too which is producing lots of basil and dill and some oregano, thyme, and mint.

The Hotel California

I pulled out my vinyl copy of the Eagle’s classic “Hotel California” yesterday and treated myself to one of my favorite albums.  Released in late 1976, this album was a critical and commercial success spawning two hit singles, “New Kid in Town”, and “Hotel California.”  One of my personal favorite songs on the album is “The Last Resort” which makes a statement about how we are treating the Earth and is as relevant or perhaps more relevant now than it was when it was written.  “Life in the Fastlane” is on this album and also makes it onto my list of favorites. 

Joe Walsh make his first vinyl appearance as an Eagle and his personality and distinctive guitar are a welcome addition.  The Eagles have always been one of my favorite bands and this album is one that I turn to most frequently although my copies of Desperado and The Long Run are also well worn.  I regret that I have never seen the Eagles in concert.  Their Farewell Tour I Live from Melbourne DVD is fantastic though and I almost (but not quite) feel like I’ve seen them live…

As I adapt to the new social realities of such networking sites as Facebook or LinkedIn, I find myself asking friends and acquaintances if they are “on” one of them.  Many of my friends are on both Facebook and LinkedIn but some are on one but not the other.  I guess it depends on what it is you’re looking for from social networking that will determine which site(s) you sign onto. 

Since I have seen a foreshadow of my own mortality in the passing of an old friend, I have made a New Year’s resolution to be more active in the social network of Facebook.  I’m hoping to keep in touch with old and new friends and to reach out to some of those I haven’t seen in many years to reconnect and refresh past friendships.  In the end, the definition of a Good Life doesn’t include the number of “friends” you have or the number of business contacts you’ve made but the interactions and relationships we make will have an impact on our happiness and that is part of my definition.

I’ve also created a full profile on LinkedIn and I try to regularly communicate with the contacts I have on that site too.  LinkedIn is more of a business network and I have made some great contacts and reconnected with old friends who have moved on in their careers.  I am hoping that opportunities will be coming my way through my membership on that site.  I’ve come across a couple that didn’t pan out for one reason or another but I’m sure that others will follow.

I was searching through my vinyl record collection the other day looking for a Coldplay album that I knew I owned.  It wasn’t until I got halfway through my roughly 500 albums that I realized two things:  first, I need to alphabetize them so when I get a hankering to listen to something I can find it, and second, my Coldplay music is on CD not vinyl!  I don’t even know if they have anything on vinyl but I sure don’t have it if they do.

That experience got me thinking that it might be nice to go through the collection and find the albums that I really liked a couple of decades ago and see if they still appeal to me.  There is a long list of albums that immediately come to mind as ones that I’m looking forward to reliving!

These are the titles of three movies my wife and I have watched over the past few weeks all centered around food.  Food Inc is a documentary about farming and how the nature of food in North America has moved from an agriculture and farming focus to a factory and food creation focus with less accent on the agriculture and more on the production.  Generating higher yields quicker and cheaper in search of the almighty buck.  But at what cost?

Food Matters is a film based on the idea that we are what we eat.  If we eat highly processed chemical laden foods those chemicals become part of our  genetic makeup and can affect our health.  The film doesn’t claim to find miracle cures or sure bets to avoid disease but what it does say is that the nature and type of foods that we eat does matter.

Goodbye to an old friend

Today I said goodbye to an old friend from highschool.  It was a time of mixed emotion since it was nice to see so many people from those days but sad that it was the passing of an old friend that brought us together.  As I was standing there listening to the service I smiled at my memories of all the good times we had.  A whole group of us always together and sharing in each other’s lives as a second family. 

Most of us have started families of our own and what we are left with is the memories of those days and the ties that bound us together.  We slip into the old roles so easily, finding comfort in the old patterns and places from all those years ago.  It’s sad that it takes the death of a friend to bring us together like that.

As I near the nine-month mark

of being laid off, I have been busier than I would have ever thought possible.  It seems that the things I’ve put off for the last 15 years are all getting done now.  Of course, having three young kids also means that the taxi service is constantly required as well as the referee, chef, litigator, judge, jury, teacher, psychologist, speech therapist, doctor (well, advil and tylenol dispenser anyway), librarian, book reader, and best of all, friend.

In between that I’ve been taking courses trying to embark on a new career while somehow managing to find the money to pay the bills.  I’ve just completed course two of five with course three scheduled to start in January.  Just need to find a market for my writing now!
