Mutant Aloe Plant

My dad sent me this picture of a “mutant” aloe plant.  Any aloe plant that I’ve grown has always done fairly well in the pot but they all stayed in the pot.  This one has decided to do most of it’s growth outside the pot and flowing out across the surrounding area.  Most of People are trying to carry on as if things are not “good enough” for Apple, then these apps viagra lowest prices can’t be in the Store – even if they can be life-changing. Another Finished (almost) Project

I’ve been working on another house project for the past couple of months.  Lily decided that a Gazebo would be a nice thing to have in our backyard.  A nice cedar one, octagonal in shape with a lovely little cupola on top.  Sounds nice doesn’t it.  Something to add to the atmosphere in the backyard and give us somewhere nice to sit in the shade when the sun is overhead.  We purchased one from a company in British Columbia and they shipped it to us a few weeks later.

"It's done, it's finally done!"

After the unpacked parts sat in the garage for a couple of weeks, we arranged to have someone come to our house and put in the post holes I would need to support the Gazebo because, of course, building it on level ground was not an option available to me.  The vision that my wife had was of the Gazebo about two-thirds of the way up the hill in our backyard.  It’s not overly steep but it’s steep enough that when the platform I built was level, the front posts are about 48″ high.  Building on a slope had it’s challenges but now that it’s done, I’m glad we did it.   The only thing to finish off next year is the skirting.  I’m going to use vertical cedar board to skirt it and attach them to a frame of pressure treated timber that I still need to install.  Oh yes, also need to finish off a bit of staining next spring.

Too Many Bunnies

The bane of my garden is the rabbit.  While I have discovered a physical barrier that is pretty effective in keeping the cats out of my garden, the rabbits don’t seem affected by it and have managed to eat the leaves of every single one of my bean plants.  What I have now are some snow peas, dill cucumbers, tomatoes, and green sticks growing in the garden.  Every bean plant has had its leaves chewed off and presumably consumed since I can’t find evidence of any leaves anywhere in the vicinity.

While this is extremely annoying, I have also noticed that the stalks are continuing to send out new leaf shoots so I am hoping that even though they have been stripped of their leaves, the roots and stalks are strong enough to keep shooting out new leaves until I can find a way to stop the bunnies from eating them.

Oliver Heavyside and Level Crossing

I’ve been searching for an mp3 of a song from 1982 that was included on the Q107 Homegrown Album Volume 4. The song is called “Level Crossing” and the name of the band that played it, and won the contest for Volume 4 by the way, is Oliver Heavyside. Those guys went on to release several albums under the name “The Partland Brothers”. You may remember them for the song “Soul City”.

I have the vinyl of the Q107 Homegrown Volume 4 but no way to digitize the song into an mp3. I suppose I could record it to tape but what’s the point since my car doesn’t have a tape deck!

Riley

Riley in OrilliaI said good-bye to Riley today.  He was a Dalmatian of 13 years and a great canine companion.  Riley came to us a lost soul, one who had suffered much abuse at the hand of his previous owner.  A “free to a good home” gem that I miss very much.

My first memory of Riley is of him peeking out from under a dresser or wall unit in the living room of the people who gave him to us.  They were an interim stop on his journey to our home and our hearts.  He had been abused so badly that it took over six weeks until he would allow me to pet his head.  If I made any quick movements, he would flee the room and look at me suspiciously from the doorway.

Over time, though, I gained his trust and he began to look forward to seeing me come through the front door.  He adopted us as his family as we adopted him into ours.  We adopted his sister, Patches, a short time later and together they became inseparable.   Sharing in the loot if we left a bag of goodies within reach, howling in unison whenever one our kids cried, and acting as a loyal pair of guards defending the house whenever we were out.  Riley was very playful and liked to “break-dance” on his back when he had an itch.  He and Patches would play tag in the backyard and through the house, running full out only to stop and turn on a dime at the corner.

Riley and Patches were constant companions for us, travelling with us whenever it was possible but staying home under the watchful eye of my parents when they couldn’t make the trip.  Our last trip with Riley was to a cottage on Lake Erie last August.  Riley loved that trip and seemed rejuvenated by the vacation.

Last night he couldn’t eat his dinner and was very unsettled for awhile before finally settling down for the night.  He seemed in good spirits this morning although he seemed a little more unsteady on his feet.  My wife and I had agreed that if he didn’t improve through the day we would take him to the vet this afternoon.

Riley left us today, shortly after noon, passing away quietly in his sleep.

Rest in peace Riley we all miss you terribly.

Time for a new car!

My Oldsmobile Intrigue is nearing the end of its days.  It is a ’98, I bought it brand new, and if I could do it again, I would love to buy that car again.  It was a great buy for the price and I admit that I got a little spoiled by driving that car.  It never caused me any huge problems except for an electrical problem that was fixed under warranty.

Now, 12 years later, the A/C has quit, the brakes probably need to be looked at, the tires are not new anymore, the passanger rear window is wonky, and the exhaust system sounds like it might need work.  Rather than spend the money trying to get that car back in shape, we’ve decided to let the trusty Intrigue go and pick up a 2007 Impala LTZ.  A comparable car in many ways including the size since there’s only a couple of inches difference (Impala is slightly longer but not quite as wide) between them.

There’s plenty of room for the kiddies in the backseat and the trunk is very spacious for all the stuff that goes with a family of five.  After living through three summers sans air conditioning, this summer looks to be cooler whatever the outside temperature!

Looking forward to the new ride.

Ghostly Toys that Whistle in the Night

A couple of nights ago, I awoke from a dead sleep to hear a strangely eerie whistle coming from one of the toys that litter our bedroom.  There’s a sofa off in one corner of the room along with a bookcase and several boxes of toys and it was from that area the ghostly whistle was coming from.

As a fan of Ghost Hunters on OLN, I thought maybe I was just replaying one of the recent episodes in my head and that I should just sit up and say, “What the crap is that?”  However, the whistling ended and I started to drift back to sleep.  A couple of moments later the whistling started up again and this time I was wide-awake wondering, “What is going on?”

That isn’t the first time a toy has started playing it’s music by itself.  We have a small stuffed duckling that was a present for one of the kids at Easter.  If you squeeze it’s belly, it will begin to quack about 10 times.  One day, my wife was rocking our son to sleep when he was only a couple of years old.  There was a thunderstorm outside and after one particularly close lightning strike and accompanying thunderclap, that little duckling started to quack.  Since it was across the room from my wife when it began quacking, she was quite freaked out but has since attributed the spontaneous quacking to the proximity of the lightning strike and thunder.  I stay away from that duck.

It is said that one must have a good and a healthy sexual life or else there are 90% chances that the person might face some sort of child anxiety disorder affects up to discount levitra http://opacc.cv/opacc/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/.._documentos_contabilistas_Modelo%2024.pdf 10% of school age kids. The price of generic drug is also viagra sildenafil cheaper than its brand name pill, thus, more affordable yet safe and effective. So if you cialis australia prices want to feel confident, start taking this natural cure. Another close call was when I happened to be downstairs late one evening and was freaked out by a doll’s carriage that seemed to be moving of it’s own accord.  I always told my wife that she could keep it since it was hers as a child but I also warned her that it I saw it move on it’s own, I’d chop it up and throw it out.  I was beginning to think about where I left the axe when I realized that the appearance of movement was caused by my shadow moving across the room and the flashlight in my hand (phew!)

Oh yes, the whistling sound in my room was caused by my eldest daughter who bumped up against the toy as she came into our room to lay down on the sofa.  Apparently, she had a bad dream and thought she saw a ghost.

Peel Literacy and Beyond Conference

This past Saturday my wife and I attended a children’s literacy conference hosted by the Region of Peel at a High School in Mississauga.  There was a great turnout and it was well worth the drive.

I was a tad sceptical at first but after an interesting and “moodivational” performance by a guest speaker, I was looking forward to some interesting and informative workshops.  In total there were 53 different workshops offered throughout the day in three sessions.

The topic of the first was how to help your child with mathematics.  This is an appropriate topic because I had some difficulty with math as a child and all the way through High School.  There were some interesting insights into current Board thinking with respect to math and I think we can use what we learned to help our three kids.

The second workshop we attended focused on socializing children and how to help them to be comfortable in different social situations.  This was another appropriate workshop since our kids tend to be a bit shy and sometimes need some prompting from us to get them involved.

We were a bit late for lunch since we decided to take a look at the offerings of the vendors and community groups displaying their wares in the main hall.  As a result, only the veggie sandwiches were left but that was fine for us.

The last presentation of the day that we sat through was how to nurture childrens’ intelligence.  The presenters gave us an overview on the current thinking of intelligence and how to help children to strengthen the areas where they are a bit weak.

Overall, I’d say the conference was a success given the number of workshops and the number of parents who considered it important enough to get up and be at the conference for 8am registration.  I was surprised by the turnout and hope that everyone got as much out of the presentations they attended as I did!

Change Your Perspective Once in A While

Yesterday I spent some time removing six feet of cedar hedge from the side of our house.  It was about 8 feet high and felt like a wall at the side of the house.  There is a three foot wide patio-stone sidewalk between the house and the hedge and then about 20 feet of lawn on the other side of the hedge.  Having the hedge there separated and hid the garden beds from the house too much so I did some trimming to open things up a bit.

Sitting on the deck now the feeling of openness is fantastic, making the yard feel bigger and giving an overall feeling of space.   Looking back now, the hedge closed in the deck and was a bit claustrophobic although I didn’t notice it until it was gone!

The hedge and deck are a good metaphor for something that we all need to do once in awhile.  Open things up a bit and give yourself a bit of breathing room.  Not necessarily take something down and throw it out but rearrange something and give yourself a fresh view.  It’s amazing what a little bit of change can do for your perspective.
