So last Friday, my kids had their first day of summer vacation!  Now the fun begins with all three of them home and looking to me for entertainment.  Luckily, I only had them for the one day before Saturday when my wife was available to help me keep them busy. 

One thing that I’ve learned since starting to look after them is that consistency and routine will be my best friends.  They thrive on knowing what is happening next and once I was able to get that pattern figured out, when it was just my youngest all day and my son for half days, things went much smoother.  Now that all three are home all day the routine becomes all that much more important.  I’m hoping to be a bit of a teacher for my son too since he’s having a bit of trouble with the alphabet.  I’d like to teach him a bit so that he at least knows his ABCs and can count to 20.

Planting a tree for Jordan

Today is my youngest daughter’s birthday.  She is two years old and in honour of her birthday we’re going to be planting a new tree in the backyard.  Her brother and sister helped me to dig a big hole in which we will plant a Princeton Gold Maple.  My wife and I went to pick it out earlier this afternoon and our local Garden Gallery delivered it about an hour ago.

What a Weekend!

This past weekend went by in a blur!  We had some friends over to our house on Saturday and then hosted both my wife’s family and my famiy on Sunday for our daughters birthdays.  What a blast…I love hosting people over at our house.  I know it’s a pain to have to clean up all the toys and stuff so that visitors get an unrealistic view of the natural state of our home but having company is a lot of fun.

In some ways I’d rather have people come here than go out because when the time goes to shutdown the party, everyone else has to drive home but I can just go upstairs!  Of course, there is the issue of dishes and cleaning up from the party but that’s a task I can live with…..

My oldest daughter just turned 7 years and when I look at her I can’t believe that she is same kid that we brought home from the hospital 7 years ago.  It seems like it was just a short time ago that I held her for the first time.  I had never held a baby in my arms until her mom gave her to me to hold.  I have a picture of that moment and it is one of my best memories.

A Topic at Last!

I am enrolled in a writing course and for the past few weeks have been stumped as to what the topic of my first assignment should be.  Not a very good start!  I’ve started and subsequently discarded several manuscripts either because I lost interest in the topic or because it seemed that I couldn’t find the right angle. 

I thought I had finally settled on a topic last week when I started writing about my experiences as a new house husband but again it seemed that the right angle was going to elude me.  Until, that is, I happened to pick up a magazine in the dentist’s office and I finally figured out what my angle will be.  Over the past few weeks, I’ve learned through experience a number of good tips that I think I can write up as an article to submit for assignment one.

Not to give away too much, but one of the most important things that I’ve learned is that no matter how much time you think you’ll have when you lose your job, if you’ll have kids at home you can kiss all that “free time” good bye!  That tidbit was one of the most difficult lessons to learn and I had to learn it the hard way.  Every morning I would wake up with a few ideas of what I was going to accomplish that day from polishing up my resume to reconnecting with some of my past business associates.  By the time my wife came home in the afternoon, I would finally sit down and realize that I had only managed to get the computer turned on.  So much for all the things I was going to accomplish.

My wife and I are on the same page when it comes to the environment that our children grow up in.  That means that we haven’t used herbicides or fertilizer on our lawn in years.

After school today my daughter wanted to ride her bike on our street and, of course, my other two also wanted to get out there.  I said okay and after a few minutes, we found ourselves a few houses down the street being neighbourly and greeting people as they began coming home from work.

It’s a beautiful day today

Today is an exceptionally beautiful day.  It’s nice and warm without being too humid so it’s comfortable.  The sun is shining and I’m planning on spending some time in the backyard this afternoon with the kids.  Well, just my son actually.  Oldest daughter is in school and the youngest one will be taking a nap soon.  That gives me time to be a dad to my only boy.

We’re going to put some nice LED lights up outside to provide some ambience for our backyear entertaining this year.  Should be a nice and easy project for me to share with my son.

Speaking of spending time with the kids, that is exactly the topic for my forthcoming non-fiction creation.  The transition out of the Corporate world was faster and easier than I thought it would be so I’m planning on writing about that experience and how it has affected our family.  Since my wife is working, the fact that I am a built-in babysitter has helped enormously; not only with the family finances but the convenience of live-in payment free day care.  I’ll note how the article is progressing periodically.
