Japanese Internment During WW II

I just finished writing an assignment for my writing class that included an interview with my Dad. I asked him a bunch of questions about his memories of the Japanese internment in BC during WW II, and as a bonus, I learned a bunch about my family history!  It turned out to be more interesting than I hoped and I enjoyed learning about my Dad’s family since I didn’t know very much about them.

After I finished the assignment I realized that I had generated more notes than I could use for the assignment.  I’m considering now writing a family history so that my kids will know who came before them and where all the different relatives fit into our family tree.  Instead of writing it as one big “biography”, my wife suggested that I write it as a series of stories that can be put together so that if it’s read as a collection of short stories, the reader gets a sense of the family history without the long read of a single story.

We will probably work on this during our “spare” time and will include stories from both sides of the family.  A bonus to writing it like this is that we can write one short story after another but not necessarily chronologically.  I can write about something in my life and then go all the way back to my Grandmother and then jump to my wife’s sister all without having to fit it all together into one big story.  I think it will end up more interesting both to read and to write!
